Keratopigmentation to change eye color

November 13, 2023

Corneal pigmentation or corneal tattooing is a method that has been used for years to improve the aesthetic appearance of the cornea. When the appearance of the cornea is disturbed by scarring, swelling, or discolouration, corneal tattooing can effectively improve the eye's appearance. Corneal pigmentation has also been used to treat visual symptoms associated with abnormalities of the cornea and iris. The main application of corneal tattooing is in defects of the cornea, anhydride (total or partial deficiency of the iris), many pupils and corneal scars. Although corneal tattooing is most often performed in cases of corneal opacity where there is no hope of vision, it is sometimes performed to improve the quality of vision in eyes with good vision. For example, after a laser iris puncture to treat glaucoma, the cornea can be tattooed at the laser puncture site to treat light diffusion. One way to eye color change is to wear coloured contact lenses. But when coloured lenses are not tolerated, the cornea can be tattooed. Sometimes, corneal tattooing may be a suitable alternative to corneal transplantation to reduce the psychological effects of the unsightly appearance of the eyes. In addition, it is the best choice.

Causes of tattooing on the cornea

The reason for corneal tattooing varies from patient to patient. Most patients undergo this procedure to restore the appearance of the eyes they have lost due to illness or accident. Others are treated to reduce exposure to ambient light in the eye's iris. The main reason for corneal tattooing is the darkening of the cornea. An excellent treatment alternative for patients for whom methods such as contact lenses do not improve function or aesthetics. The most common applications of corneal tattooing are corneal scarring, lochia, anidria (complete or partial absence of the iris), polydactyly, traumatic iris defects, and iridolysis.
Complications
Like any other procedure, corneal depigmentation has its side effects. Among these complications, we can mention corneal infection, inflammation and mild pain.

Corneal tattoo surgery technique

Corneal tattooing is usually done under local anesthesia. First, the corneal epithelium is removed and inserted into the corneal stroma with a fine-coloured needle. Care must be taken so that the needle does not enter the eye's anterior chamber. The procedure must be performed under sterile conditions to reduce the chance of infection. After the end of the contact lens operation, a bandage is placed on the eye. Another method is that a space is created in the thickness of the cornea with the help of surgical or femtosecond instruments, and dye is sent into it to colour the corneal stroma.

operation

Corneal pigmentation control is a surgical method that consists of making a circular micro-tunnel in the cornea using a femtosecond laser and applying a dye, thus covering the natural colour of the eyes. A quick and painless operation that is performed under local anesthesia and lasts for an hour. It does not affect the internal structures of the eye and does not require an eye transplant. Safe operation thanks to three precautionary rules. Procedure: - Requires a modified femtosecond laser programmed for this procedure. Not all femtosecond lasers meet these specifications. - The surgeon must use this essential tool to perform high-precision surgical movements. - Requires proven dyes (currently blue, green, brown and white).

When does the colour need a revision?

Revision cannot be repeated because the resorption rate varies between patients and pigments. For some, this may occur after a few weeks or months, while for others, resorption does not appear until several years after the procedure. Everyone is different. Many patients find that the absorbency makes their colour look more natural over time. Because the colour naturally permeates the cornea, the colour tends to fade, becoming more evenly embedded in the eye. In short, even if the corneal depigmentation technique allows for a definitive change in eye color, development is underway since reversibility is made possible.

After a corneal pigmentation procedure

Patients who have undergone corneal pigmentation surgery should have someone drive them home after the surgery is completed. Patients may experience drowsiness after the procedure, and they will be prohibited from driving for about 24 hours. Recovery from corneal pigmentation surgery is fast, and the results are long-lasting. Most corneas show no signs of returning to their initial eye color, which means that patients can enjoy their new eyes for the rest of their lives.

Does the corneal pigmentation process hurt?

Patients are placed under anesthesia during the procedure, significantly reducing any pain or discomfort they experience. After the surgery, patients may be sensitive to light for a few days. Once a few days have passed, patients can enjoy their new eye color without any side effects or complications.

What happens if I don't like my results?

One year after corneal depigmentation, 95% of patients reported being satisfied with their results. In many cases, the newly pigmented eyes not only improved the patient's appearance but also increased their self-image and self-confidence. Patients unsatisfied with their new eye color can choose to undergo a second corneal pigmentation procedure.

Advantages of undergoing eye color change operations in CERITAMED

The popularity of plastic surgery in Iran generally did not come out of anywhere. Instead, it is the result of many advantages provided by major medical institutions, foremost of which are the following:

  • Prices for eye color change in Iran are moderate and relatively lower than the global average
  • Major medical centres in Iran rely on a range of modern and advanced medical technologies
  • Receive the highest levels of health care before and during the operation
  • Iranian medical centres cooperate with a group of experienced and qualified doctors
  • Iran includes many tourism agencies facilitating communication between arrivals and medical centres and providing exceptional services such as hotel reservations, transportation, etc.
