Strabismus treatment in Iran

Treatment strabismus includes a number of different treatment options and must be considered individually by the specialist eye surgeon in each case, but the purpose of some of these treatments is to treat the cause of strabismus, such as cataracts, with surgery or hyperopia treatment using glasses, etc. so,  this is how to treat strabismus in adults and children.

Eye patch: is strabismus permanent? Strabismus may lead to amblyopia, so  then the healthy eye must be closed with a temporary patch for fixing strabismus, which makes the amblyopic eye stronger, more rigid, and more able to move, which may restore the healthy position of the eye. It varies from case to case and can take weeks or months for the eye patch to be applied.

Glasses: for treating hyperopia, which may cause strabismus; glasses reduce the incidence of simple strabismas.

Surgical treatment: In order to treat strabismus as a radical solution, surgical treatment is required in most cases of strabismus. Operations are performed in hospitals under general anesthesia which last for short periods and  after that the child or adult returns to his daily life. Through partial amputation of the eye muscles, the aim of the eye strabismus surgery is to strengthen the eye. Surgical operations have reached a very high success rate in several countries, including Iran, and some may require several surgeries. Some children may need glasses in spite of surgery.

Botulinum toxin injections, which are injected into overactive muscles: Botulinum toxin may help to stabilize muscle function and reduce the symptoms of deviation in these cases. The toxin temporarily paralyzes the muscles when it is injected at a small dose. It is injected into the eye muscles, where its effects can persist for several months and frequently result in long-term alterations in the way the eye muscles operate. This helps to restore ocular parallelism by means of a less invasive surgical procedure.

In addition, as the surgery contributes to improving visual parallelism, extending peripheral vision, reducing visual fatigue, enhancing or restoring function of both eyes together which are calledutsubinocular sight, surgical treatment is undoubtedly the most successful and best among all types of therapy to improve strabismus.
Depending on the case, Strabismus surgery is usually performed at an outpatient level using general or local anaesthesia. It may be mild or moderate pain following surgery, which can be relieved with an analgesic. Conjunctival hyperemia may last for a few weeks, and this is very common and normal.  The patient normally returns to normal activities within a few days, although this may be different depending on the complexity of his condition.
